Education secretary promises federal aid for uniform graduation rate formula

U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced
today federal support for a uniform formula to calculate graduation
rates.
The formula was first proposed by the National Governor’s Association
in 2005 and endorsed by 45 states including Michigan. She announced
states would be required to adopt the formula by 2012. She made the
announcement at a Detroit Economic Club luncheon today at the Masonic
Temple in Detroit.

Sweeping No Child Left Behind reforms unveiled in Detroit

In town to speak before the Detroit Economic Club at the Masonic Temple, Spellings deplored the Detroit Public Schools district's abysmal graduation rate -- the lowest in the country at 24.9 percent, according to a national study released this month. Fewer than half of students graduate in 17 of the nation's largest cities, and 1.2 million drop out annually, according to the study by America's Promise Alliance.
