China's ambassador to the United States addressed concerns over recent discoveries of lead contaminants in imported toys and other China-manufactured products during a speech Tuesday at the Detroit Economic Club.
Zhou Wenzhong told about 700 attendees that the solution to the recent high-profile problems involving consumer goods is for the United States to back off its protectionist trade policies.
"The growing protectionist sentiments" are "worrisome," he said.
He held out General Motors Corp.'s joint ventures in China as an example of the type of relationship that other U.S. businesses should follow.
