Detroit's Eastern Market To Open Tuesdays In July As Sen. Stabenow Promotes Expansion
date: April 12, 2011

Eastern Market draws tens of thousands of customers to Detroit every
Saturday, and Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow thinks it could do the same
on other days of the week.
"Why should Eastern Market only be open on Saturday? Why not
Sunday? Why not every day?" said Stabenow, D-Lansing, at an appearance
at the Detroit Economic Club in Southfield. "They are looking at
expanding."
Indeed, Dan Carmody, president of the
public-private Eastern Market Corporation, tells The News that the
farmer's market will be open to the public on Tuesdays this summer,
starting in July.
And Stabenow, recently named chair of the
Senate Agriculture Committee, said she's lobbying for federal aid to
help the market expand and potentially open on Sundays. Last year, she
helped Eastern Market secure a $100,000 federal grant to increase healthy food options in the city.
Separately, the Erb Foundation of Birmingham earlier this month awarded Eastern Market a grant to build a $200,000 community kitchen, intended to serve as something of an incubator for local food processors.
Eastern
Market remains a bright spot in the still-struggling city, drawing
visitors from around the region while providing rural and urban farmers
alike an outlet for their products. Investment and expansion should
benefit the hundreds of vendors and merchants that participate in the
market while providing a boost to surrounding businesses.
