Detroit — Whirlpool Corp. aims to increase its revenue 33 percent in the next three years, part
of its certainty that U.S. manufacturing will remain a bright spot in
the economy, the appliance maker's CEO said here today. "I have never seen more opportunities for growth than I see today," Whirlpool Chairman and CEO Jeff Fettig told the Detroit Economic Club. "We are very confident in the future of U.S. manufacturing."The world's largest appliance maker wants to increase its revenues from
its products that include refrigerators, washers and dryers to $24
billion by 2014. It produces 50 million appliances a year, and 82
percent of its products are made in America.Whirlpool credits much of its success to its Michigan work force. The company employs about 4,000 workers in the state.
"We
get our (best) ideas from the people on the shop floor," Fettig said.
"We started there. We always want to stay in Benton Harbor. It's our
home."
That is why Whirlpool plans to spend about $300 million in investments in Michigan with a large chunk of the money being spent on a new and
renovated office campus in Benton Harbor, where it has been
headquartered since its founding in 1911. Construction is under way."We will be the first thing you see when you drive into Benton Harbor," Fettig said.
