Session 1 Focus: Personal Brand

Students learned what a brand is and that they represent a brand – their own!   Factors contributing to a solid brand are authenticity, consistency, and alignment with one’s core values.  Success Skills were introduced in this session, which are a series of soft skills that every employer desires in a job candidate.

Session 2 Focus: Career Exploration

Students learn to take career assessment surveys and YL teams help them explore their individual results.  In small breakout groups, conversations take place which make the students think critically about their interests.  Those conversations include what students can do now to prepare, what will that career look like in the future and what impact might technology have on their career choice.    Students are given a challenging homework assignment after this session – interview a professional in the field of their interest.

Session 3 Focus: Career Economics and Realities

Students examine lifestyles and their respective budgets along with wage potential of various careers.  The costs of degrees, licenses and certification are explored along with jobs that will be in demand in the next seven to ten years both in Michigan and nationally.

Session 4 Focus: Manufacturing and Skilled Trade Opportunities

From today to the next ten years, there are projected to be millions of manufacturing and skilled trade opportunities that will provide challenging jobs and a good lifestyle.  Yet projections are that two-thirds of these jobs will go unfilled.  As part of the career exploration mission of CRA, students spent this session learning about some fascinating opportunities from the Assistant Dean of Engineering, a student membership liaison from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a current and a recently-graduated student and then they toured the advanced manufacturing labs. Many thanks to the University of Michigan Dearborn and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers for their help with this session.

Session 6 Focus: Networking and Professional Etiquette It’s time to put some of the lessons learned into practice as students visited a Young Leaders place of employment in Session 6!  At their respective company visits, students met with key employees to get a taste of their specific jobs and students showed off their networking skills. Students were asked in advance to prepare by learning about the company and people they were going to meet.
Session 7 Focus: Graduation Students attended a DEC meeting where they were encouraged to network with DEC members using the skills that they learned throughout the CRA program.
