About This Meeting

Panelists Carl Camden and Kweilin Ellingrud addressed the Detroit Economic Club Monday, June 12, 2017 on gender equality in the workplace. They discussed barriers that exist and steps that should be taken to close the gap while continuing to foster talent. Carl Camden, former President & CEO of Kelly Services, remarked that senior leaders can support others by helping to remove barriers.

“I think if you are in a senior leadership role, one of your primary jobs is to get it (barriers) out of the way for your talent. Remove the obstacles for your talent and at that level I don’t care which type of talent, ethnic, diversity, age range, male or female – it doesn’t matter. Your job is to make it possible for your talent to succeed and to decide what unique barriers each various groups may face,” Camden said.

Kweilin Ellingrud, Partner at McKinsey & Company, shared tips on how to help others in their own organization.

“Sponsor somebody and if you can, sponsor a couple people. And as a woman you can also sponsor others in your environment, specifically not mentor. Sponsor being sticking your neck out, helping someone in their career, creating opportunities where there wasn’t one before.”
