About This Meeting

United Way Worldwide President & CEO Brian Gallagher and United Way for Southeastern Michigan President & CEO Dr. Herman Gray addressed the Detroit Economic Club Tuesday, October 25, 2016 on how companies and communities can promote social responsibility.

To move forward in changing things, Gray said that conversations need to take place. “We have to fall back to our core values as a community and discuss that. The conversations between companies, nonprofits, religious groups, etc. must take place. You have to have the notion of courage and leadership. You need leaders who are not afraid to say somethings that may upset people but to strive to bring people together.”

Gallagher also discussed how business leaders can engage. “The best business leaders that I have seen have never moved away from ‘we do well by doing good.’ If their communities are successful, that is where their employees come from, that is where their customers come from. The best companies realize that this is business.”
