About This Meeting
DEC Young Leaders met with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on April 27, 2022. This meeting was held at BasBlue in Detroit.
The Honorable Jocelyn Benson shared her path to becoming Michigan’s 43rd Secretary of State.
Upon moving to Detroit, she held notable positions as a law clerk to the Honorable Damon J. Keith, Dean of Wayne State Law School, and CEO of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE). SOS Benson noted, “It’s not about what you want to do, but what impact you want to have.”
As Secretary of State, Jocelyn serves an “administration role to make democracy work” and governs with data-driven decisions.
A Q&A session followed with YLs asking how to decipher good vs. bad information, how to take care of yourself during turbulent times, and how to encourage first-time voters.
She advised, “See challenges as opportunities to get stronger.”
The event concluded with additional networking and a tour of BasBlue.
